There are a wide range of materials available to homeowners so choosing the right ones might depend on your budget, needs, climate, and personal preferences. Here are some of the most popular materials and the advantages and disadvantages associated with them.

These shingles are generally found on gazebos, patio covers, pergolas, or overhangs, and the most popular type of wood that is used for making timber shingles is western red cedar.

What is great about timber shingles is that they are an eco-friendly choice, as the cedar is grown plantations. Additionally, timber shingles have natural insulation properties that can exceed those of other materials. It is worth mentioning that roofing made of cedar has been known to withstand extreme weather, such as cyclones and hail.

Metal is by far the most popular material used for roofs in Australia. The well-known products from Colorbond are considered responsible for making this material so popular amongst Australians.

Metal panels can come in a very wide range of profiles and colours. However, it is somewhat more expensive than some of the other materials, but there is no doubt that metal panels are an attractive and long-lasting option.

Over time, panels have been improved in order to provide better insulation and to have noise reducing properties. Pricing depends on the quality of the panels so opting for better quality materials, which have sound-dampening and insulation properties is far better than cheaper options.

Written by Rafael Niesten

In his early 20s, Perth local Rafael Niesten, won a scholarship to study in Canada, with that came the opportunity to volunteer at a local radio station. That spawned his entrepreneurial streak, returning to Perth in 2001 he set up community radio Groove FM. More by luck than design, they became successful, too successful as they took a significant chunk of the Perth Market. This sent up the red flag with his commercial competitors who saw to it that he came before the Australian Broadcasting Authority and on technicalities such as the number of volunteers he was forced to move on. He received the citizen of the year award for Western Australia (youth) and was a finalist in the Australian of the year awards (Youth). Falling on his sword he turned to running small and large scale events, all the while buying, renovating and selling properties. Buying and selling land and renovated houses provided a grounding in the property industry. He founded a cloud based medical grade voice recognition company, followed by co founding the first true cloud application for private practice in the health sector. He successfully exited these ventures at the end of 2016 and began building Bricks+Agent.
