How Much Does Hiring a Gardener Cost in Australia

113 (1)

In Australia, a gardener will generally have a similar hourly rate to any other type of tradesman. However, you might need a gardener’s services more often than a plumber’s or an electrician’s simply because a well-maintained garden requires a lot of hard work. Additionally, a gardener can have a lot of work-related expenses and work outdoors can be quite labour intensive.

The average gardener hourly rates in Australia are around $45 per hour. You can also find premium services for as much as $50 per hour. For complex and extensive jobs, gardeners might charge more than their regular fees. However, for simple tasks, you should expect to pay around $40 per hour. Hiring a gardener is a very good idea, especially if you want to your garden to look year round.

Gardener Price Guide - The standard gardener rates in Australia

  • Weeding: $90-$100
  • Pruning/hedging: $50-$60
  • Lawn mowing: $70-$80
  • Garden cleaning: $60-$70

Aspects that Influence the Costs of a Gardening Job

1. Self-employed vs. Business

115

Depending on the tradie that you hire and on the type of job that must be done, the prices might vary. A professional gardener who is self-employed will probably charge less than a well-established gardening business such as Jim’s Garden.

On the other hand, a large gardening business has more employees available, so you might want to choose them if you have a very complex and extensive job.

If you want to hire a team of professionals for regular garden maintenance you can also choose between hiring a self-employed gardener or a franchise system, like Jim’s Garden maintenance services.

2. Equipment and materials

113 (1)-1-1

Generally, a gardener’s rates will include the use of equipment that is necessary to complete the job and the labour. However, if you want them to use an expensive fertiliser or to plant rare flowers or to build garden edging, you will probably have to pay for these expenses, as they might not be included in the standard rate.

3. Number and difficulty of the tasks

113 (2)

The tasks that you need the gardener to do will also influence the final costs. For instance, if you only need them to remove the weeds, they will probably charge a smaller fee. On the other hand, if they must perform many tasks like weeding, fertilising, lawn mowing, and tree lopping, you should expect to pay a higher amount of money at the end.

If you want to know what the weed removal or garden cleanup costs beforehand, make sure you ask several gardening professional for quotes in order to get a fair price.

Having a lot of trees in your outdoor area might require hiring an arborist, as only an arborist will have extensive knowledge about the maintenance of trees.

4. Size of the garden

114

The costs of gardening also depend on the total area of your garden. If your garden is extensive, difficult to access, or if the area is sloping, then the job will be more time-consuming. The amount of time it takes the gardener to complete the job dictates the total costs that you will have to cover.

It is very important to have an open conversation with your gardener beforehand and to tell them exactly what the job is. That will help them plan ahead and offer you an accurate cost estimate.

5. The Australian state

115 (2)-2

In Australia, most services will cost differently in each state. For example, the cost of gardening services in New South Wales is the highest and is around $56 per hour.

The second most expensive state in regards to gardening services is Victoria. In Victoria, a gardener costs $50 per hour.

The average gardening price in the ACT is about $49 per hour, while in Western Australia, for the same services you will pay $48 per hour.

If you are a Tasmanian resident, you will be happy to learn that Tasmanian gardeners have the lowest fees on the continent, charge only $40 per hour.

Looking for landscaping services in your area? Head to Bricks+Agent and list your job to receive quotes from local specialists. Remember, it’s a good idea to get quotes from three or four different tradies to compare what they offer. Once you’re ready to connect you can simply enlist the services of the company you choose.
